Green Volunteers after a successful sticker handout in October.

We have several upcoming sticker handouts during the upcoming weeks in August, and are looking for volunteers.  These are a great way to connect with local voters, introduce them to Erich, raise our profile in the riding, meet other Green supporters  and cut down on junk mail.  And if the past is any indication, it’s also a way to have fun, meet the community and get a little bit of exercise.  No political knowledge is required for these events, we do not try to convince people to vote green and new volunteers are always welcome.  Upcoming dates are:

Tuesday, August the 3rd (directly after the long weekend)
5:45 PM near St. Vincent St. and Duckworth St.

Wednesday, August the 11th
5:45 PM near Grove St. E. and Johnson St.

Monday, August the 16th
5:45 PM near Leacock Dr. and Lampman Ln.

5:45 PM near the end of Ardagh Rd.

Tuesday, August the 31st

Locations are to be announced, and all start at 5:45 pm and run for 2-3 hours.  These events are scattered throughout the town.  Please dress in a presentable fashion, wearing Green Party clothing if you have any.  Be prepared for the weather. (Sunscreen? Layers? Water?)

Please message Shawn at Barrie Greens dot Ca to confirm when you would like to come.  New volunteers welcome.  All hours count toward community involvement hours for high school students.

If you are unable to drop off your items due to various circumstances, please drop us an email!

Items we will not accept:

* Mattresses
* Any products that do not meet current safety standards including recalled items
* Baby items – cribs & cradles, car seats, carriages & strollers, baby gates, playpens, baby walkers, children’s sleepwear
* Toys for children under 3 years of age
* Large appliances – refrigerators, freezers, stoves/ovens, washer/dryers, furnaces, water heaters
* Food products
* Used personal care item
* Chemical products, barbeque & propane tanks
* Automotive products: tires, batteries, gasoline, oils, antifreeze, auto parts
* Building materials/plumbing fixtures, carpeting and padding
* Broken Furniture, damaged upholstery, bunk beds or other items in need of repair or assembly (i.e. water beds, modular office systems/dividers)
* Lawn darts, helmets and face protectors

It’s hard to say “no thank you” to a donation. Certain items are refused for some very good reasons:

* They are not recyclable or contain hazardous materials
* They are too old to comply with current safety standards
* They are broken, parts or labels and instructions are missing
* Our volunteers may also decline a donation if, in their judgement, it is not in clean, saleable condition.

EARTH HOUR SUPER-DRIVE !

Saturday, March 27th.

We are combining an E-Waste drive, a Clothing drive, and a Food drive. You can bring items to our central depot, or contact us and we’ll pick them up from your driveway.
E-mail us with name, address, phone number and what you’d like picked up and we’ll arrange it with you. Ideal pickup is the morning of Saturday, March 27.

E-Waste:

In partnership with GreenGo Recycling Solutions Inc., WE WANT YOUR E-WASTE. That means anything electronic (e.g. with a circuit board), or anything that plugs in or uses batteries.  So you can offload old computers, monitors, printers, fax machines, phones (landline or cell), even old blenders, coffeemakers, kettles, heaters, toys, whatever.

All those things you’ll unplug for Earth Hour and then realize you don’t really need anymore – make Earth Hour last all year!

Also accepting old batteries & scrap metal.

Clothing:

In partnership with Nifty Thrifty, Barrie’s free clothing centre, we are collecting used but GOOD CONDITION (and clean) clothing. We are especially looking for:

- baby and child clothing
- all jeans, especially male (boys/teen/mens)
- plus-size clothing

Nifty Thrifty provides free or very low-priced clothing to people in need.    (Please, no dirty or torn/worn clothing.)  Make space in your closet and drawers by donating things you never get around to wearing. Someone will really appreciate your gift.

Food:

In partnership with the Grocery Assistance Program (GAP), we will accept donations of canned foods or toiletries, especially diapers. If we’re coming to pick up your old clothes or e-waste and help you clean out your closet, please help us refill the GAP shelves with a food item. If you’re dropping off at our depot, please include a donation for GAP.

Special Guest MIKE SCHREINER, leader of the Green Party of Ontario, will be here in Barrie, rolling up his sleeves and helping us collect and sort your e-waste, clothing, and food. Drop by if you’d like to meet him in person and see him break a sweat to help out citizens of Barrie.

Depot Location:

If you want to save us the trip to your house, you can bring items to our collection depot between 9 – 12 pm (noon) at Nifty Thrifty. 110 Dunlop St. W.

Following the Super-Drive, there will be a special luncheon for Mike at the Thai Bamboo Restaurant at 61 King St. West noon – 2 pm, following which he will chair a regional Town Hall meeting (open to the public) at Bodystream (51 King St.) from 2 – 5 pm.
